Persis Eskander

Research Associate

Persis conducts literature research in ecology focused on identifying ways to reduce wild-animal suffering. Previously she conducted qualitative research and analysis in social justice policy and advocacy in the not-for-profit and public sector. Persis holds degrees in law and philosophy from University of New South Wales and is currently pursuing a Masters of Economics at Australian National University.

Georgia writes about a variety of topics including animal welfare and existential risk on the website Eukaryote Writes Blog, and helps run the Seattle Effective Altruists group. She has done research on bacteriophage-host interactions, and graduated from The Evergreen State College with a focus in microbiology.

Catia Faria Portrait

Catia Faria

Catia is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and a board member of the UPF Centre for Animal Ethics. She received a PhD from Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona), with a thesis on the problem of wild animal suffering and intervention in nature. She has co-edited a journal volume on WAS, published papers and blogs extensively on the topic. She is a member of Animal Ethics.

Oscar Horta

Oscar is a member of Animal Ethics and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Previously he worked as a researcher in the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, and carried out his postdoctoral research at Rutgers University. He has many publications about speciesism and the situation of animals living in the wild.

Peter works as a data scientist at DataRobot, a start-up that offers a machine learning automation platform for data scientists of all skill levels to build and deploy accurate predictive models in a fraction of the time. When not working at DataRobot, Peter works on a variety of global priorities research at Charity Science Health.

Brian Tomasik

Brian writes about ethics, animal advocacy, and far-future scenarios from a suffering-focused perspective on the website Essays on Reducing Suffering. He cofounded and advises the Foundational Research Institute, a think tank that explores crucial considerations for reducing suffering in the long-run future. Previously, Brian worked at Microsoft and FlyHomes as a data scientist. He studied computer science, mathematics, and statistics at Swarthmore College.
